#DisableStereotypes

International Day of People with Disability is almost upon us, and to mark the occasion we’re asking buddies to share their stories.

In line with this year's theme of “disable stereotypes”, we’re asking buddies to take to the camera and record themselves answering the following two questions:

- What is a stereotype you have experienced in relation to your disability?

- Why is this stereotype incorrect?

The team behind International Day of People with Disability are encouraging people to share their own messages of “seeing the ability in disability”, and we’re calling on the Gig Buddies community to record videos that we can share on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and our weekly newsletter).

This is a great opportunity to inform, educate and change attitudes about disability - and it would be wonderful to see as many buddies on camera as possible.

We’ve provided some tips on how to make a recording:

  • Try to record yourself answering both questions in one take. If you make a mistake that doesn’t matter - let the camera roll!

  • Take a 5 - 10 second pause between answering both questions.

  • Try to film indoors to reduce any background noise (like cars or wind)

  • You do not have to speak for long. This is your film.

  • If you need help, maybe ask your buddy, a relative or support worker to hold the phone while answering the questions.

If you’re after some inspiration please click here to load up an example, filmed by Joni from the Soul Fly Band. Thanks Joni!

We’ve also provided some tips on how to share your recording:

- Once you have recorded your film and have saved it on either your phone or computer, please go to the following website:

- From there follow the steps to upload your video. You do not need to login. Please send your file to the following email address:

- Enter your email address and, within the ‘Message’ box, please put: 'IDPwD video' followed by your name. For example:

IDPwD video - Joni

- You may be required to enter a verification code. This will have been sent to the email address you provided. You may have to check your junk inbox.

International Day of People with Disability is Thursday 3 December. We would like to receive all videos before THURSDAY 26 NOVEMBER, ensuring we have enough time to edit and make some fantastic videos!

Go west

We’re on the search for western-Sydney-based male volunteers.

In particular, we’re looking for chaps aged between 30-40 who live near Campbelltown and are into sport, cars, RnB and going to the pub.

If you know someone who fits the description, please let us know. We’re more than happy to chat further about volunteering with us. Alternatively, any referral can click here to access our online application.

If you or a referral have any questions we can be reached via Facebook Messenger or on text / phone on 0422 061 990 or 0412 145 819.
