Buddying up

Writer's picture: Gig Buddies SydneyGig Buddies Sydney

Recently, we provided a snapshot of where the Central Coast project sits in terms of pairing numbers.

To date, we currently have six actively matched buddies, with 12 still waiting for a volunteer.

Thanks to Craig and Cassi (below, L - R) - our newest batch of trained volunteers - we’ll soon be in a position to address this ratio.

We’d like to pass on our appreciation for joining us on Zoom last Friday. It was great to go through the formalities prior to officially pairing them with their respective buddies.

Excitingly, we hope to soon be in a position to announce an additional match, too.

Go west

Calling all buddies, we invite you to our Western Sydney hub launch.

Taking place at Dooleys Lidcombe on Thursday 25 August, this is your chance to meet the Gig Buddies team, and to find more about who we are and what we do.

We’ll be providing nibbles, while attendees will have the opportunity to also snap up some exclusive Gig Buddies merchandise. Whether you’re paired up or not, an unmatched buddy or volunteer, or an interested parent or support worker - we want to see and hear from you.

What else is on?

As for our other August outings, tickets are still available for our gatherings in Annandale and Zetland.

Have you ever wanted to give flower making a try? Come and join us in Annandale on Saturday 6 August as we get creative.

Then - taking place later in the month - we invite you to join us in Zetland on Wednesday 17 August for a night of drag bingo, prizes and plenty of laughs courtesy host, Prada Clutch.

To sign up for either event, load up the links below:

Please note, our night out at Hornsby RSL (13/8) has sold out.

If you have any questions about our forthcoming events, get in touch: we can be reached via Facebook Messenger, email: info@gigbuddiessydney.org or via text or phone call on 0411 252 228.

Manly for the day

On the subject of our socials, it was great to meet up with so many buddies last Saturday.

We headed to Manly’s New Brighton Hotel, catching up with attendees over a bite to eat.

Thanks to everyone who joined us. To see more photos from our trip to the Northern Beaches, click here.

Each and every week we invite buddies to connect with us for our weekly chat.

Our chats take place via Zoom. To attend get in touch via text: 0422 061 990 or Facebook Messenger.

"I really enjoy helping others…"

Every month we bring you news and views from those who make up our advisory group, Soul Fly Band.

This time we hear from Nalyn (below), who shares her own sporting success story.

“I am very honoured to have been recently selected as a finalist of the Sport Star of the Year Award 2021/22 by the Ryde Sports Foundation.

I like to be very active and am very passionate about netball and dancing. Some of my biggest achievements have been winning gold and bronze representing Netball NSW in the Marie Little Shield Team at the Nationals since 2016, and recently completing my Assistant in Teaching (AIT) Dance qualification with PerformAbility.

Completing my AIT course has also opened up opportunities to work with Special Olympics as an assistant sports coach at schools in the Ryde local government area, and other organisations. I really enjoy helping others with additional needs to help them improve their skills, feel included and I enjoy seeing them have lots of fun.”

- Nalyn, Soul Fly Band member

COVID-19 Vaccinations update

The NSW Chief Health Officer has extended the current exemption that allows workers (and volunteers) who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to continue to work if they have been assessed as being essential to the operation of the service.

All workers (and volunteers) who have not yet received their booster must also take reasonable steps to get the booster as soon as practical. The exemption has been extended to September 6 2022.

If you haven’t done this yet, it’s important that you send the latest copy of your vaccination certificate to Gig Buddies ASAP. The certificate must show the dates on which you have received all THREE doses of the COVID vaccine.

Similarly, for those who have been granted an exemption from a medical professional, we require a copy of any relevant documentation.

You can access your vaccination certificate through your Medicare or MyGov account. Please send this certificate to info@gigbuddiessydney.org or via text/WhatsApp it to 0411 252 228.
